âEr, Maggie?â
âYeah?â I didnât look up from the sketch in front of me.
The sound of Carolâs heels against the wooden floor filled the studio apartment. âYou have a visitor.â
âOh, who?â I lifted my head. The sun flooded through the large windows, making me blink before I realized William stood in the doorway.
My focus shifted to Carol, who looked like a deer in headlights.
âHe was standing outside.â She indicated for him to come in before closing the door behind him.
Part of me wanted to ask her why sheâd decided to invite him into the building and up to our apartment in the first place, but William knew my disapproving glare a mile off.
âItâs not her fault.â He came toward me. âI begged her to let me in. I almost got down on my knees.â
âHe nearly did.â Carol nodded before mouthing sorry to me.
It wasnât her fault. William could be charming to the point where a person felt they had to help him if he asked for it. He looked good, but then he always looked good. The only thing proving he might have suffered a blow recently was the lines beneath his eyes, those chocolate-colored eyes I adored.
Twisting on my stool, I rolled my pencil through my fingers to stop my hand from shaking. âYou shouldnât have come.â
âI have to disagree.â He stopped by the second sofa, a safe enough distance away from my work area. âI think after giving you two monthsâ space, this is the best time.â
âIâm busy.â
âWell, then I promise to get straight to the point.â
âWilliamââ
âCome home.â
I just looked at him.
âWe donât have to get married, not yet, but Iââ
âIâm not coming home.â
âWhat happened?â
I didnât answer.
âWhy did you leave?â
âYou shouldnât have come.â
He sighed. The sofa creaked as he sagged against it. âI had to.â
âNo, you didnât.â
âDid you really think I would just let you walk away from me?â
I turned back round to my work. âI hoped you would respect my wishes enough to leave me alone.â
âI do respect them, but it doesnât mean Iâm going to give up on you, or on us.â
âThere is no us.â The words were crisp and heavy. I hated myself for sounding so cold, but I didnât trust myself around him. I had made up my mind. It was over. âThere hasnât been for two months.â
âThen I think I have a right to know why.â
âDid you get my letter?â
âI did.â
âThen what else do you want?â
âBeing unsure and scared is normal. Itâs called getting cold feetââ
âIt wasnât cold feet.â I swept away the stray tear rolling down my cheek.
âPlease donât push me away, Maggie.â His voice sounded strained. âI love you.â
Pain seared my chest. âI canâtâ¦I canât talk about any of this right now.â
âThen when?â
âI-I just need some time. I need space to think.â
âYouâve had two months.â
My eyes fluttered shut, my eyelashes collecting the tears escaping. âPlease just go, Will. Please.â
âWhatever is wrong, we can figure it out together. Talk to me. Please.â
Taking a deep breath, I clutched my pencil and tried to shut out his voice.
